How to Play Poople Ladder: Rules & Guide

Last updated:

Master how to play Poople Ladder with our clear guide. Start with the four-letter word shown at the top of the ladder. Change exactly one letter at a time while keeping the other three letters intact. Every intermediate step must be an accepted word from our word list. Your goal is to guide the ladder to POOP in the fewest possible steps.

Our word ladder rules keep every turn simple: to change letters, select a letter reel by tapping it, clicking, or using the Left and Right arrow keys. Rotate the reel with Up and Down arrow keys, vertical touch swipes, or mouse scroll wheels. You can also type letters directly with your physical keyboard or the on-screen keys. Press Enter to lock in a valid word, Backspace to clear the active letter, or Delete to undo your most recent locked word.

A yellow indicator bar with a central dot highlights letters that match POOP in that exact position. This indicator confirms slot alignment, though the overall four-letter word still needs to be an accepted vocabulary entry.

Par represents the exact number of steps in the shortest possible solution path for the puzzle. Steps tracks only the accepted words locked into your ladder. The Undo button steps back one locked word, while Restart resets your ladder to the starting position. Using either undo or hints marks the run as Assisted.

When you need guidance, hints provide progressive help: first showing remaining shortest distance, then pointing out which slot to change, and finally offering a valid next word. Completing the puzzle without hints or undos earns a Clean score, and achieving par cleanly awards a Perfect score.

A new daily puzzle unlocks every day at 00:00 UTC, giving every player across the globe the identical starting challenge. Poople Ladder is an unofficial fan-made project featuring dedicated puzzle generation and word validation, with all prior days preserved in the archive.

Your initial completion and category milestones save directly to local browser storage. Share cards present your step count, par, and rating without revealing word letters. The game board, word checker, and solver rely on the exact same accepted four-letter vocabulary.

Word Ladder Rules & Reel Navigation

You can navigate the four letter reels through touch, mouse, or keyboard inputs depending on your device.

Each reel rotates independently so you can preview candidate letters before locking in your move.

Keyboard Controls

Use the Left and Right arrow keys to switch between reels, and Up and Down arrow keys to cycle through letters. Press Enter to submit your move once a valid word appears, Backspace to clear the current letter, or Delete to undo your latest step.

Touch and Mouse Interactions

On touch screens, swipe vertically over any reel or tap the on-screen keyboard below the board. Desktop users can rotate reels using the mouse scroll wheel or click directly on any letter slot.

Reel Color Indicators

A yellow indicator dot signals that the letter matches POOP in that exact column. Gray tiles indicate letters that do not match the target slot. Aligning letters helps chart the shortest route toward the goal.

Scoring Ratings & Progression

Every daily puzzle awards a clear rating based on your move efficiency and whether you consulted assistive tools.

Par reflects the mathematically shortest route calculated by our solver engine.

Clean and Perfect Solves

Solving the ladder without using any hints or undo actions awards a Clean rating. If your step count also equals par exactly, you earn a Perfect rating with a highlighted victory badge.

Assisted Runs

Using the Undo button to reverse a locked word or requesting step hints marks the run as Assisted. Assisted runs still count toward your total solved count while keeping streak records honest.
